Sizzling In September Sunshine
If you’ve read my previous post or have been following my husbands blog, then you will know as a family we have been trying to have at least one meat free day each week. Working with Quorn to try the variety of products on offer, I’ll be honest, we’ve found it pretty easy. Even the kids have enjoyed it and you know how fussy our son is!
I’m writing this as I’m sat catching some September sunshine. It’s been an amazing summer and to be honest, there’s no sign of that sunshine disappearing any time soon! Hooray. When the sun shines on a weekend it means two things in our house, everybody outside and a BBQ being fired up. Even as the temperatures cool a little, there’s no need to wave goodbye to all the fun of summer. Pretend you’re camping and just throw a jumper on! If we’re having a BBQ I’d usually be hot footing it to the supermarket to stock up on meat but last weekend we decided to delve into the freezer and have a Quorn BBQ instead. I love brioche buns with burgers so if you haven’t tried those, you must give them a go too.
Until recently I had the idea in my head that meat free burgers and sausages would literally touch the BBQ and either burn or fall apart. I’m happy to report that they cooked beautifully. We use a gas BBQ, which may not give off that amazing burning charcoal smell that drifts across all the gardens in the street, but it does have a much better temperature control. The hubby likes to tell me it’s his cooking skills rather than the BBQ though. I’m happy to leave him to it and have no intention to learn the ‘skill’, ha!
From my point of view a Quorn BBQ means I can control my calorie intake and keep my Weight Watchers points to a minimum. The burgers are relatively low and the sausages in particular, are very calorie friendly. It’s so easy to overindulge at a lunchtime BBQ then have your normal evening meal and before you know it you’ve had two days worth of points or calories in one day. Obviously this is fine occasionally, but as a family who love to BBQ, we like to look at ways of reducing the calories so we can enjoy them as often as possible!
Top tips include a big mixed salad bowl and a fresh fruit platter for dessert. They add so much colour to the BBQ too, great if you have guests to impress. I do love a brioche bun and they’re not too heavy either. However, if you’re looking to keep your points low, your bread intake is definitely one thing to be mindful of. We’ve also recently switched to zero alcohol or low alcohol beer, this is a great calorie saver for me. You still get to enjoy a beer in the sunshine, whilst watching both your alcohol units and your calories. Absolute winner for a lunchtime BBQ.
The weather of summer 2018 has been very kind to us and in switching our BBQ to Quorn, we’re continuing to be kinder to the environment we live in. Producing the meat we eat every year emits more greenhouse gases than all of the vehicles on earth put together. Now that is an astonishing fact!
How did you spend your summer and what will be on your next BBQ?
