The January Blues
So we’re a couple of weeks into the new year and I’m sat writing this on what is apparently ‘Blue Monday.’ It’s not quite pay day and everyone is skint from Christmas.
The festivities are now a distant memory, the weather is cold and people have started to fall off the wagon with New Year resolutions. So it’s official – I should be feeling miserable today. I’m not though because I’ll be honest, I didn’t really make any resolutions and I’ve got so much to be thankful for and to look forward to that I’m not going to waste my time feeling glum because it’s not pay day yet and it’s cold outside!
Why didn’t I make any resolutions this year? I was sat on New Years Eve and thought, I’m not sure I’ve got a pressing desire to make any big changes. When I lost my weight, almost 4 years ago, I didn’t join Weightwatchers until the March. Sometimes we’re just not ready to make big adjustments straight after Christmas, during this period of time that is apparently making us blue and depressed. I actually think part of my success was due to not putting so much pressure on myself, which of course is what resolutions can do. So don’t beat yourself up if you’ve fallen off the wagon already or are finding your new diet a bit glum. Don’t be so hard on yourself and try just making small changes instead. The supermarkets have spent the last few months tempting us into overindulging and then as soon as 1st January hit all the adverts are ripped down and replaced with granola and avocados. Talk about hitting us all with a big stick!
Of course, a new year, the start of a new month or a new week can all give us the opportunity to reassess and decide what we want to achieve. Taking stock of our lives and getting onto the track we want to follow isn’t ever a bad thing. We’ve recently teamed up with David Lloyd Clubs and I’m really looking forward to working on my personal fitness. I’m comfortable that I know how to eat healthily and Weight Watchers has taught me so much when it comes to food and how to have a healthy and balanced diet. I never feel restricted or hard done to and I enjoy looking for new healthy recipes that we can try. The fitness side is another ball game and still something that puts me outside of my comfort zone sometimes. We had a tour around the club over the Christmas holidays with the kids and there is so much that we are going to be able to do both individually and as a family. The kids are looking forward to us playing tennis and I’m looking forward taking the hubby on at squash! The gym facilities looked amazing and I’m going to be spending as much time as I can in the pool because I loved our recent swim challenge.
If you’re on a roll with your New Year health kick, that’s brilliant news and well done! If you’re not quite ready to embrace it yet, that’s OK too. Don’t put pressure on yourself and remember even small changes can have a big impact.
